My friend Rob is putting some final touches on a masonry wall heater. in the video, this is the protruding section of wall about 5′ high and 4′wide. it is made from brick, cob, and plaster. the system we built directs the flue gases from the wood stove into the wall, the smoke moves back and forth, and up and down within brick channels to heat the whole mass. the wall stores the heat energy and releases it slowly to the living room and kitchen on the other side. a masonry heater wall makes a wood stove more efficient by capturing more heat that would typically be lost up the stove pipe and out. the masonry wall is still drying out and you can see a circular pattern caused by the hotter center part. there are three cleanouts for vacuuming out creosote buildup. we got the plan from a german zine and decided to change the clapper design. the clapper is an adjustable internal flap of metal that either directs the flue gases right out or thru the baffles and then out. after about 20-30 minutes of starting a fire in the stove, the clapper is flipped to direct the smoke through the entire wall. we try to run the fire in the stove as hot as possible (without overfiring) for complete combustion, less creosote, and more draw thru the masonry wall.

This pilot flame seems like it’s not right. I don’t have any experience with these things but it seems to me that the pilot should be tiny and quiet. As the video shows, this is a relatively large, noisy flame. It appears to be catching the igniter aflame as well. Both the pilot and the igniter have some sort of a white stuff on them (presumably from the “bad burn”?). I’ve tried gingerly to get it off with a wire brush but don’t want to be too rough on them, so to no avail.
